HVAC Is Changing — What Santa Cruz Homeowners Should Know About R-454B

If you’re considering replacing an air conditioner or heat pump in Santa Cruz County, you may start hearing a new term from your HVAC contractor: R-454B, also known by Bryant as Puron Advance™.

This is the next generation of refrigerant being used in new residential HVAC equipment, replacing R-410A as manufacturers transition to refrigerants with a much lower environmental impact.

Do I Need to Replace My Existing R-410A System?

No.

If your current air conditioner or heat pump uses R-410A and is operating well, there is no requirement to replace it simply because newer equipment uses R-454B. Existing R-410A systems can continue to be maintained and repaired.

The difference becomes important when it’s eventually time for a new HVAC system. R-454B and R-410A equipment are designed differently, so the refrigerants cannot simply be swapped between systems.

What Does This Mean in Santa Cruz County?

For local homeowners, the change makes planning ahead more important.

Santa Cruz homes range from older properties near the coast to newer construction throughout Aptos, Capitola, Scotts Valley, Soquel and surrounding communities. The right system isn't simply the newest one — it needs to be properly sized and selected for the home, its ductwork and the conditions we experience here on the Central Coast.

If your existing equipment is getting older or requiring increasingly expensive repairs, it can be worth understanding your options before you have an unexpected failure.

A New Generation of Bryant Equipment

As a trusted Bryant dealer, BognerHVAC can help homeowners understand both existing R-410A systems and the newer generation of Bryant equipment designed around Puron Advance™ (R-454B).

The technology is changing. The fundamentals haven't: proper equipment selection, good installation and ongoing maintenance are still what determine how well an HVAC system performs over its lifetime.

BognerHVAC has been helping Santa Cruz County homeowners stay comfortable since 1982. If you're wondering whether to repair, maintain or start planning for replacement, talk to the local name you know and trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is R-454B refrigerant?

R-454B is a newer, lower-global-warming-potential refrigerant being used in residential air conditioners and heat pumps. Bryant refers to it as Puron Advance™.

Is R-410A being banned?

No. Existing R-410A systems can continue to be serviced. The major change affects new residential HVAC equipment, which is transitioning to newer low-GWP refrigerants.

Can my R-410A system be converted to R-454B?

No. R-454B requires HVAC equipment specifically designed for it. An existing R-410A system cannot simply be recharged or converted to operate with R-454B.

Should I replace my R-410A system now?

Not solely because of the refrigerant transition. The age of your system, repair history, efficiency, comfort and anticipated future costs should all be considered when deciding whether to repair or replace your HVAC equipment.
